How does network marketing work? Many people think that it is the best business model out there. Other people are so afraid of the concept that they just assume network marketing is a pyramid scheme or a scam.

The official definition of network marketing is a distribution channel that is defined by government regulations. It’s nothing more complicated than that. But exactly what kind of distribution program is it? The ideal way to understand network marketing is to understand what a traditional distribution model is first.

There are several key components to a traditional distribution model: the manufacturer, the agents, the wholesaler, the retailer, and finally, the customer.

Manufacturers create products in large quantities and they work directly with wholesalers and agents.

Agents are the middlemen who negotiate between suppliers and distributor to make contracts between different distribution channels. Now, some manufacturers don’t work with agents at all, and just connect with the wholesalers. However, agents still play a part in the transactions, because agents make sure all negotiations are legal under the rules and regulations of importing and exporting product.

Wholesalers keep large quantities of product and stock on hand. Wholesalers work with retailers directly. They are who negotiate with manufacturers and with agents about storage of backlogs of products, and they also distribute product in a way that makes sure that retailers have the right amount of product on hand.

Retailers are the only people who actually sell directly with customers. They carry product and stock on hand, after getting it from wholesalers.

The customer is at the end of this chain. Product moves through all of these channels and once the customer gets it, the price is raised considerably! The customer is not able to figure out the true cost of a product from what they pay for it.

Network marketing is a different way of getting product into the hands of the customer.

First off, there are no middlemen in network marketing. Instead, network marketers make connections directly between the manufacturer (which is actually the network marketing company) and the consumer. Basically, instead of having to go through the agent and the wholesaler, network marketing sales representatives put the product right into the hands of the customer, without all the complication.

An excellent perk of working in network marketing is the ability for the customer buying the product to actually become the distributer. It works the opposite way, too. If a customer likes their products so much that they would like to get a discount, he or she can actually become a distributor of the network marketing company, and get their favorites at a discounted “wholesale” price. Current distributors can actually use their products themselves, becoming their own customer!

Now you can understand why network marketing distribution is considered one of the most cost effective ways to get a product to customers. This system adds a personal touch to an impersonal transaction through person to person contact, customers save money by not using middlemen, and distributers are empowered so they can sponsor their own team of resellers (down lines).

It should be no surprise that the lifeblood of ANY MLM or home based business is having plenty of leads to talk to. It’s also no secret that you make money in network marketing by doing two things.

But what happens when you work through that list of everyone you know and you’re not a millionaire yet? What happens if you’ve been down that road in the past and it didn’t work out so well? Some of you might even be at the point where your friends and family avoid you like the plague so they don’t get pitched on yet ANOTHER opportunity!
Whatever the situation, the only logical answer short of closing up shop is that you need to find a way to expose your home business or MLM to more people, otherwise known as acquiring leads.
There are two ways to get leads, you can buy generic home based business leads or you can generate your own.
Before we start talking about how to generate your own targeted leads, let’s go ahead and talk about the first option which is buying generic home business leads. This seems to be where most network marketers focus their time, money and energy.
The first thing that you must know about ANY home business lead that you purchase is that no matter how many buzzwords are used in describing that lead. No matter how fresh it is or how good that lead sounds it’s still someone that you don’t know, that doesn’t know you, doesn’t know anything about your business there is no guarantee that they are going to pick up the phone or give you a second of their time to discuss joining your home business.
90% of purchased leads are produced by people filling out generic online forms about making more money from home and you don’t know the circumstances about why they filled out these online forms.
Were they looking for a Job instead of a home business opportunity? Were they trying to win a free Xbox? Where they drunk behind the computer at 3:00 am?
You just don’t know!
There are really no way cut corners on prospecting the leads that you purchase. Oftentimes you are competing with several other people who are contacting the same leads and the only way to make these types of leads pan out for you is to buy large quantities and sort through them to see who has an interest. So here is my suggestion for network marketers using these types of leads:
#1 – Keep your costs down when you buy “cold” leads. I don’t suggest spending more than 30 cents a lead! Most MLM lead companies online sell leads for $1 to $5 apiece… Stay away from these high priced leads and use a service like BigTimemlmLeads.com where you can get surveyed leads for as little as 14 cents apiece.
#2 – Start to put together a strategy to generate you own home business leads and phase out the cold contact leads over time.
Okay, now for the really fun stuff and the best strategy for building your home business. How do you as a home business owner go out and start generating your own targeted mlm / home business leads?
The first thing you must understand about the process of generating your own home business leads is that it takes time and it’s not something that happens overnight. You have many hoops that you have to jump through in order to get yourself set up with everything you’re going to need.
The goal of generating your own leads is to leverage your time and efforts by being able to cut corners on the “sorting” process as well as position yourself highly with your leads. This means that when you do actually talk to them on the phone they already have an understanding of who you are and what your opportunity and/or product is all about.
This makes your job promoting your home business much easier and leaves your prospects much more responsive to what you want them to do.
So know that we know WHY we want to generate our own positioned leads… It’s now time to look into the step by step process of doing so.

It is a much better way to spend your time because emotionally you will feel a lot better about building your network business when you’re not experiencing a high rejection level that many network marketers face.

This gives you 3 things that you now need to concentrate spending your time and energy on in becoming an expert at.

1. Driving traffic to your landing page.

2. Following up with your prospects and enrolling those who are interested into your business

3. Teaching you are downline distributors to do exactly what you are now doing.

The failure rate in network marketing is staggering – at least 97% of network marketing reps fail to make money or recover their investment in the first place.

Actually, the problem is NOT with the network marketing industry but rather with the failure mentality of people who get into the business. (If you fail in an examination, you can’t blame the teachers or the system because at the end of the day, the only person who can study hard and pass the exam is only YOU).

There are four roads to failure in network marketing. They all have to do with your mindset. Have these mindsets, and you are guaranteed to have roadblocks between you and your success.

(1)    People looking for an easy path to wealth

Nothing is given to you for free. Some people think that network marketing is like a free win in Las Vegas, where you put in a few quarters and you get a jackpot in return. However, this is not how things work

(2)    They believe that if you start high, you won’t have to work very hard

Some network marketing businesses allow you to purchase a higher status which lets you buy more products at a lower rate to sell to your customers, and therefore giving you larger commission checks. But starting a bit higher doesn’t mean that you skipped over having to work hard. Instead, you have more invested up front. Therefore, you need to work even harder to recover the investment you put into your business. You may have bought yourself a higher rank, but you have not bought your downline.

(3)    Waiting for profit from your upline

Sitting and waiting for your upline to place downlines under your group is another way to fail. It’s easy to get caught in this mindset, especially under binary structured plans.  By relying on others as a crutch, you will fail. Even if your upline creates downlines for you in your network, they are just a perk. You didn’t earn them; they are a gift. It’s not your upline’s job to build a team for you. If they do provide you with representatives, it’s a benefit for their network more than yours.

(4)    They don’t want to build a strong network

This business is called network marketing for a reason. Building a network takes time and energy. A half-hearted effort brings half-hearted results. Corporate successes didn’t make it to the top by coming in late, leaving early and wearing flip-flops to the office. Network marketing representatives succeed by working hard and by selling their business.

Don’t let these four paths to failure become your paths. Work hard and put in the time, and you will succeed in your network marketing business.
